‘The Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. Then the Lord said to him, “Reach out your hand and take it by the tail.” So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. ‘ Exodus 4:3-4 NIV

Did you notice that God didn’t rebuke Moses for fleeing the snake? Very few things in life are more important to a shepherd than his staff. God transformed the staff into a snake, Moses fled, yet no rebuke was earned.

Many in life don’t know when to walk away even when a staff once so dear to them transforms toxic! When your dear and precious staff becomes a deadly snake, unless God tells you to hold it by the tail i.e stay with it, don’t let your dependence or loyalty to it keep you around any much longer. At that point it is no longer your soothing staff but a stranger serpent.

Things change, people change, sometimes on a dime, so fast that people who knew them may not even believe how fast! For you to think it was your staff before it turned a snake, therefore it would retain same loyalty to you, may end up making you its first casualty. John F Kennedy said “those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside”, either you are seeking power or just seeking to retain loyalty, quite often, the outcomes are usually one and the same. 

Many families have exposed themselves to avoidable hurts and ended up paying a high price, when sadly, a loved one developed an addictive tendency but in the name of love, boundaries weren’t quickly set. When Adam and Eve went rogue, it pained God, He made plans for their redemption. Although, He still had them close but not as close as before, He sent them out of Eden and fortified it shut! Even putting a cherubim and a flaming sword to guard the way to the tree of life!

A childhood or a long term friendship has suddenly turned toxic, unless God says hold it by the tail, please let go! When Abram and Lot’s servants began to scuffle often, Abram called for separation. The prodigal son left, his father although pained, didn’t follow him. Even upon the son’s return, repentance and reconciliation first started on the outside of the house, before the father took him in.

A very important job, it may even be a God given one or even a ministry that has suddenly become deleterious don’t hang in there, walk – unless God says otherwise. Jesus went to region of the Gadarenes, performed an exorcism, the city rejected him, he walked.

Every Bible student knows how crucial Barnabas was to the story of Saul of Tarsus. Yet, when they couldn’t agree on John Mark, they paired with different partners. Demas was initially praised by Paul as a trusted coworker and fellow labourer. Demas later loved this world, he flipped, Paul felt forsaken, but not forsaken enough to follow him.

Reporter: “How do you find peace?”

Bruce Lee: “You don’t find peace. You choose it. By what you ignore, by what you release, by what you stop giving energy to. That’s the shift.”
